3 Introduction At a glance or a quick read-through, the book of Judges can appear to be a fairly simple and straightforward section of Scripture. Upon further examination however, the issues both in and around the book of Judges make for difficulties in faithful scholarship of the book as an authoritative source of God’s living Word. The aim of this paper is to develop an outline for the content of the book of Judges; to examine historical, geographical and cultural factors surrounding the setting of the book of Judges; to evaluate the dating and authorship of the book of Judges; to examine the critical issues in and around the book of Judges; and to assemble a guideline for most effectively preaching and teaching from the book of Judges. The resulting work is intended to act as a guide for personal and corporate study of the book of Judges. Ultimately, as a result of this paper, the hope is to demonstrate above all else that God’s people need a Godly King to reign over His people so that they can best honor and glorify Him. Outline of Judges There are many varying parts to the book of Judges. Outlining the book is difficult not because a clear structure does not exist, but because there are multiple lenses through which one can examine the book of Judges. The structure examined here will attempt to best sequence the events of Judges in a way that demonstrates the flow of the book from passage to passage. This approach seeks to evaluate the text linearly while maintaining a broad overview of the book at the same time. There are three essential parts that the book of Judges can be broken up into, with multiple subparts beneath them: 12 I. The Deterioration of Israel (1:1-3:4) 1 2 The majority of content from this outline derives from either the ESV Study Bible (pages 437-438) or Talk Thru the Bible (pages 58 and 63-64) .
