Nurse shortage has become an even bigger problem since being hit by two category five hurricanes that caused many nurses to relocate. From my experience, on average the nurse-patient ratio on the medical-surgical unit at my organization is one nurse to seven patients. I currently work in the post-partum unit, and the nurse-patient ratio can be as high as sixpatients to one nurse. The increase patient load results in the nurses feeling overworked and overwhelmed and sometimes leads to medication errors or important task getting looked over.
