Phonology | University of Toronto | Department of Spanish and Portuguese | Brazilian Indigenous Languages (PRT368H1-F) | Fall 2018 1 BRAZILIAN INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES : PHONOLOGY (handout based on Aikhenvald [2012], Chapter 3 “The Sounds of Amazonia”) General characteristics of Amazonian Languages: o No liquids ( l, r ) or just one (usually r ). o Affricates are more common than fricatives ([pitʃa] ‘fish’ in Yudja; [atʃa] ‘meat’ in Yudja) o The unrounded central vowel ɨ is common across different languages ([ba ʔ ɨ] ‘paca’ in Yudja) o Finding a contrast between oral and nasal vowels is common ([kaka] ‘jacu’ (a type of fish) in Yudja); [kãkã] ‘boy’ in Yudja) C ONSONANTS Consonants systems vary in a great deal: Pirahã (eight phonemes – the bilabial nasal m is an allophone of b 1 ): East Tucanoan languages (most languages have 9 consonants): 1 [X] is an allophone of /Y/ if [X] is one of the ways that the phoneme /Y/ ends up being pronounced in a word.
