Geog 349 Europe Spring 2008 Study Guide for Exam 1 The exam covers chapters 1-4 in your text, the first 4 media readings (see Learn@UW ), and lecture material through Wednesday, February 20. 1. Introductory material How do the citizens of Strasbourg simultaneously belong to “many Europes”? How can Europe be thought of as an instituted region, a naively perceived region, a denoted region? What part of Europe may be seen as a “heartland”, that is a region that best demonstrates the traits (personality) of a European culture system? What specific traits may be used to identify a European culture or personality? What parts of the continent may be seen as an “inner zone“, as an “outer zone”, and as a “periphery” with respect to a European culture system? What is the EU, and to how many countries has it most recently expanded? Which of the three kinds of regions outlined above (instituted, naively perceived, or denoted) does the EU best represent? 2. Europe’s environments What are the implications of Europe’s relative position (location) on the surface of the earth? – e.g., with respect to latitude, with respect to the Eurasian landmass, with respect to the seas? What are the driving forces behind European climate and weather patterns? What are the four major terrain belts discussed in class and where are they located? What are their origins (how were they formed), relative ages, principal component parts, and predominant characteristics (e.g., topography, glaciation, vegetation, drainage, resources, relationship to climatic patterns)? How is Iceland an e special case? What special role has glaciation played in determining the coastal outline and landform features of northern Europe? … of alpine Europe? Roughly how far did the glaciers extend over Europe during the last ice age? Why are annual levels of precipitation especially high in Ireland, the Scottish highlands, the west coast of Norway? What “grain” in the topography of the Scottish Highlands is revealed by the regions great lakes (lochs)? Why are Norwegian fjords “U-shaped”? Why do vegetation patterns change so quickly as one travels from north to south across the Northwestern Highland zone of Europe?
