Brianna Berg 21 September 2007 Music 101 Listening Journals (1-4) “Sylvie” by Sweet Honey in the Rock This song has a smooth melody that stays within simple vocal ranges. The background singers harmonize and then everyone comes together on the melody for the phrase “every little once in a while.” The harmony is simple and repetitive. Sweet Honey in the Rock sings this song a cappella which makes the song homophonic. The phrase “every little once in a while” is the theme of the song and is repeated at the end of every verse and chorus. The only significant change in the song occurs in verses 3 and 4 when one of the women solo and the harmony isn’t in word form, its more of an “ooo” with pitch changes. This song is slow and duple meter. A four beat pulse is more natural for this song because of the verses. Each line has four words. The song is slow and makes me feel like the singer is tired and needs rest. “Sylvie” is very melancholy and a little grief-ridden.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
