Case 3
MR, a 23-year-old Native American male comes in to see you because he has been
having anxiety and wants something to help him. He has been smoking "pot" and says he
drinks to help him too. He tells you he is afraid that he will not get into Heaven if he
continues in this lifestyle. He is not taking any prescription medications and denies drug
use. He has a positive family history of diabetes, hypertension, and alcoholism.
America has commonly been referred to as a melting pot of culture. Immigrants have
come from far and wide to the United States bringing cultures and traditions. Culture refers to
human behavior including beliefs, customs, and values. These behaviors can be influenced by
religion, race, ethnicity, or even social groups. Cultural competence is the awareness and
knowledge of different groups along with an integration of this knowledge into the care of
patients and polices and standards of the organization (Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, 2015).
Cultural Factors Associated with American Indian Patients
Cultural traditions can vary greatly throughout the American Indian population.
