Out of the philosophers listed, I believe Thomas Hobbes and David Hume make the best arguments pertaining to free will and the human mind. Hobbes was an empiricist and materialist, meaning that he portrayed a thought as being a physical movement, with the only cause and effect being movement to more movement. He said that thoughts and feelings are small movements in the brain. This is a more scientific approach to understanding the “mind” of humans. David Hume questioned that we have free will, but did not deny that we do. He believed we have actions we can’t necessarily control, like the instinct to avoid something that would kill us, but we also have the freedom to act on our desires if nothing is preventing us from doing so. Both Hobbes and Hume provide good perspectives on free will and the human mind. Thomas Hobbes defined a thought scientifically.
