However, there are a few rappers who still rose to famewhile avoiding those subjects. Jermaine Cole is one of them and he’s a personal favorite of manyhip-hop enthusiasts. “Lost Ones” is a story about two couples in their early 20’s who has anunplanned pregnancy. The music video portrays the song word for word, verse for verse andeven though it’s his voice throughout, the word choices and the video successfully shows whichperspective Cole takes on. Like most advertisements and music videos, “Lost Ones” usesFowles’s appeals. Jib Fowles is an author who writes about entertainment and its effect on theviewers. His article, “Advertising’s Fifteen Basic Appeals”, lists all the different methodsadvertisers use to hook the consumers and since it’s possible to argue that music videos areadvertisements, Fowles’s fifteen appeals will be useful when analyzing J. Cole’s “Lost Ones.”His song and music video for “Lost Ones” appeals to the need for guidance, to aggress, andfulfillment of physiological needs to shed light into a real situation that tends to get overlookedquite often which allows the viewer to emotionally and mentally connect to the video.The need for guidance - according to Fowles, it is “The opposite of the need to nurture isthe need to be nurtured; to be protected, shielded, and guided.” (par. 29) - is expressed in hislyrics to show that people in this situation needs outside opinions and help. J. Cole does so with asequence of questions that begs for many answers. “How we gonna raise a kid by ourself?
