There were many centralized systems that were either empires, chiefdoms or kingdoms. While the rest of the communities lived as nomads. West African kingdoms which aresometimes used symbolically by the western Africa leaders including the kingdom of Mali and Ghana. It should be noted that these ancient West African kingdoms are not in any way close to where the current countries are. These kingdoms growth was dependent on gold trade in the region which he began in the 5th century when trade across the Saharan desert began. Century’s tales had spread, tales of African kings who lived in magnificent courts. Kings so rich their pets were adorned with gold. Demand for gold from West African kingdoms grew alongside the stature of the countries. Despite how big these kingdoms had grown they declined for similar reasons (Britannica, 2018). Mali empire, grew in the 13th century to late 15th century, had risen from the Ghana Empire which had fallen due to invading forces and internal disputes. Mali prior to being a kingdom was a state in Ghana. The state rose to its greatness under the leadership of king Sundiata, the lion king. He was replaced by Mansa Musa, who after his death the kingdom fell since his sons were unable to hold the empire together. Internal conflicts led to the smaller states in the kingdom breaking off and the kingdom collapsed. Songhai kingdom rose to power as Malicrumbled. Songhai had been a vital trade center within Mali Empire. Great Songhai kings led using an organized system, making it the largest and most powerful kingdom.
