Dr. SwearingenCULF 3331September 26, 2018The Science of Global WarmingThe Gaia Concept What is the main idea behind the Gaia concept? It is a proposition that describes Earth as a system whose components are closely related and interact to bring the serene conditions for their own existence. It supports the notion that Earth exists as an interconnected structure. How does is point us to thinking that about Humans as part of the natural world rather than distinct from it? Humans are part and parcel of the natural world and not discrete as they are part of the whole system called Earth. It is evident during the expiration process in that the atmospheric oxygen triggers life in human and in exchange they exhale carbon dioxide that is essential for plants. The Great Aerial OceanHow do the gases in the atmosphere interact to help the planet breathe? The atmosphere allows the heat from the sun to penetrate through it. The air within the earth and atmosphere is heated by contact and by the warmth radiated from the earth. The CO2present holds heat while ozone particles distribute it at the same time it acts as a shield from excess heat and light. The CO2ensures that temperatures are regulated on Earth to enhance a serene environment to live in.
How will adding carbon and other greenhouse gases alter that system and harm the ecosystem that we presently live in?Adding more carbon and other greenhouse gasses into the environment will create an umbrella-like hovering above the earth surface. Earth will be unable to reflect excess heat into the atmosphere which will lead to its accumulation and this will lead to global warming.
