Alan Strang, the boy, poked the eyes out of all the horses in a barn one night, andgave no explanation to anyone. His psychiatrist, Martin Dysart, who also has his own personal problems, is finally able to decipher why Alan did such a crude thing. I found the book to be quite interesting, it made me feel like a detective while I was reading. However, it left me with some questions. I wonder if Alan was born with a mental illness, or if the environment he grew up around influenced his behavior. In one of the first pages of the book, one of the characters describes Alan Strang by saying, “There’s something very special about him.” While I think that this character probably did not mean that Alan was special in a good way, I think that they might not have necessarily meant it in a bad way either.
