Name of Playwright: The name of The Seagull’s Playwright is Anton Chekhov . Playwright’s Dates: The Seagull was produced in 1896. Background on Playwright: Anton Chekhov was born on January 17 th , 1860 in Taganrog, a town in southern Russia. Chekhov was the third son of his parents who owned a grocery business, Pavel Chekhov and Evgeniya Yakovlevna. When he was 16, Chekhov’s father and mother fled to Moscow with his younger siblings, to escape debtors his father owed for the failed grocery business, leaving Chekhov behind in Taganrog to finish school. During that time, Chekhov tutored the nephew of the man who bought their estate for an unfairly cheap price. While in high school, Chekhov had already begun writing stories. He first began writing humorous stories to a magazine he created with his brother that he called Zaika (Stammerer). In 1879, Chekhov moved to Moscow to attend medical school and published his first short story. He continued to publish stories and graduated medical school in 1884. In 1887, Chekhov’s play, Ivanov was performed for the first time and later was successful. He won “the best literary production distinguished by high artistic worth” in 1888. After purchasing the estate, Melikhovo, he discovered that he had an advanced case of tuberculosis. He wrote four major plays: Ivanov , The Seagull , Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard . The Seagull was written in 1895 and was first performed in 1896. He became known for his collaborations and differences with Konstantin Stanislavski, the famous Russian director and acting teacher. In July 1904, Chekhov died in a German spa that was unequipped to care his illness. Luckily, he managed to complete his last play, The Cherry Orchard, before he died. It
