Unformatted text preview: Art rainwater, Superintendent Madison metropolitan school district (608)663-1879 Dear Superintendent Rainwater, I am writing this letter in regard to medicating children with ADHD. This is a major issue that needs to be addressed in all schools. The National Institute of Mental Health released a study in 2007 stating that between three and five percent of children in the US have ADHD. Many of these children are being treated solely with medication. A report in 1996 by the United Nations claims that 10 to 12 percent of all male school children in the US are currently being medicated to treat ADHD, this rate is much higher than any other country in the world (2007). In many instances schools are suggesting these children be medicated, which directly affects increased amount of ADHD diagnosis in this country. Many children feel as though school is where they can get away from it all, but it is quite the opposite.
