Period: 1 Names: Bobby Beck Corbin Rogers Build an Atom PhET Simulation Lab Directions: Please follow these directions carefully and in order. Labs not submitted following these directions will not be graded. One person needs to create a shared Microsoft Word document of this lab. Share the document with each person in the group AND your teacher. Each person in the lab group will type their name in a different color text selected from the standard colors (bottom row of colors when changing text color). No two members of the same group should use the same color text. No student should use the color red – that is for teacher comments. Any answers or contributions to the lab by each person should be typed in their color text. Do NOT erase each other’s answers. If you disagree with an answer or want to add more information to an answer, please add your contribution to the answer beneath the previous answer. Always place your answer under each question, not at the end of the question. When you see a question that begins with CS, you must use complete sentences with proper spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Use the spell check and grammar check to help you. After completing the lab, see the final directions on the last page. PART I: ATOM SCREEN 1 Go to the website: 2 CS: Explore the Build an Atom simulation with your group. As you explore, talk about what you find. Each person should list one thing they learned (that is different from their other partners). I learned that to have a stable atom, you need the same amount of protons and neutrons, or up to 2 more neutrons to protons. 1 Click on the + sign for each of the boxes (element name, net charge and mass number) to view changes as you change the number of particles in the atom. 2 What particle(s) are found in the center of the atom? Protons and neutrons are found in the center of an atom.
