Speech Imagine yourself sitting in a classroom----say, a fourth grade social studies class. There is a teacher at the front of the room, but a groundskeeper is mowing grass outside captures your attention instead. When the mower moves away, however, you feel bored and restless. Pretty soon your swinging feet slam into the seat in front of you. The attentive student sitting there yelps and the teacher interrupts the class to ask what the problem is. This sudden activity jolts you back into focus; you think “finally there is something interesting happening.” You’re beyond feeling embarrassed about being the center of this kind of attention. This kind of thing happens all the time, and you have quite a reputation for this sort of behavior. And besides, it isn’t really your fault. They all say you probably have ADD or ADHD or something like that and can’t help but act this way. This sort of thing happens everyday in many classrooms across the United States. Did you know that between 3 and 5 percent of children have ADHD in the US? This suggests that at least one child in every classroom has this disorder. Also, did you know that between 10 and 12 percent of male school aged children are being treated with Ritalin, a medication used to treat ADHD? These statistics are very high, a study released by the United Nations states that at least 2 boys in every class room are being treated in this manner. These children have to take a medication everyday just to focus and do better in school. That doesn’t sound right. Something is wrong with this. We need to do something to change this. Especially since many of these children could be treated in various other ways.
