The thesis of this story is that Okonkwo is not an accepting man and this trait causes his downfall in the end. He did not want to accept that he was the son of an efulefu , or a worthless man, like his father who died with much debt and almost no yams , the king of crops, for his son to inherit. Okonkwo also did not want to accept that any of his male children would be an agbala , or a man with no title, who is also considered a woman. He did not want to look like a bad father for raising weak children. After he committed a female ochu , or an accidental murder, it was hard for Okonkwo to leave his fatherland and see his compound and yams destroyed. Okonkwo was not happy with the church being built in the village, and he would not accept the white people trying to convert their religion, so he was happy the
