Chinua Achebe usesthe narrator to convey this information because the narrator is very knowledgeable about the village of Umuofia and can give the reader a look into their lives of their people, such as the main character Okonkwo. Okonkwo is not an epic hero because he did not make a positive impact on his community. Rather, he negatively affected his community. He was unable to maintain Umuofia’s independence and was exiled from Umuofia. Okonkwo had the potential to be an epic hero, but he never reached this potential due to his many flaws. A main feature of the narrator’s voice in this story is the use of the third-person omniscient voice. The narrator provided the reader with extensive detail about the Igbo people because he knows almost everything about them.
