The format of this class encompasses three main parts:the Enlightenment,nineteenth-century literature, andtwentieth and twenty-first century literature. Students are expected to employ critical thinking, particularly when completing writing compositions (mini-essays that involve various formats of literary analysis—inferences, comparison/contrast, application of concepts in new contexts, etc.). Engaging with peers on writing compositions also involves developing skills of scholarly conversation, the art of persuading someone with a different opinion, and the grace of respecting different points of view. This class involves research and versatility in using MLA format for in-text and Works Cited citations. Students will be required to work elements from research into each of their critical essays and to combine and analyze them together with the information from the readings. Pre-requisite: ENG 102 with a grade C or higher. Course requirements: 3 critical essays(60%) 11 in-class writing compositions(10%) 2 written exams (midterm & final)(10%) 23 daily reading quizzes(20%) ENG 252 Grading Scale: A 100 - 90 pts; B 89 - 80 pts; C 79 - 70 pts; D 69 - 60 pts; F 59 or less Students will be required to write short compositions throughout the course, learn to form interpretive readings of literary works, and support those interpretations with evidence and illustrations drawn from the text of the works; this skill includes learning to express those interpretations in clear and organized writing.Writing will be an important part of this class, and the ability to write well in Standard Academic English is vital to success in the course. Each composition will require students to: -Formulate a central interpretive/debatable idea about the text -Develop that idea logically and coherently with adequate supporting textual examples -Present ideas clearly and concisely 1
-Quote briefly from the text, quotations must accurately reflect the text’s meaning, be integrated into the writer’s own sentence structures and ideas, be no more than 2 LINES, and be cited correctly -Anchor the composition to the text, but extend the discussion by adding to it the writer’s own conclusions about the significance or relevance of the material -Meet the minimum word count,300 words, for each assignment All submitted work needs to be typed and submitted on the assigned due date through Blackboard. Use a clear, easy to read font for all essays (Times New Roman, for example). Please see examples on Blackboard.
