LEGALIZATION The regulations for marijuana usage has changed greatly the past few years. Whether it be medical or recreational use, legalization is a highly debatable topic. The biggest aspects of whether or not marijuana should be legalized, the following points are analyzed; the physiological, psychological, and social effects of marijuana. For as much research there is on the negative consequences of use and legalization, there is even more evidence supporting that marijuana has many physical and mental health benefits. Physiological Effects of Marijuana Marijuana comes from the leaves of a plant where the active ingredient is known as delta- 9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). It can be administered orally, or by inhalation. Inhalation is a rapid absorption where the effects start within 10 minutes and last two to three hours (Levinthal, 2016). If it is ingested in food, it takes even longer to signal the brain to release dopamine (Cox, 2017). Once it has been absorbed in the blood stream and the brain signals for dopamine release.
