2Building a Private Learning Network.Social media entails the collection of entire online communication networks created for interaction, collaboration, and content sharing. If used rightly, social media is an effective learning tool. Social media is gradually becoming increasingly ubiquitous to learners, and therefore, tutors find it as a potential learning tool. Examples of social media tools in the contemporary are social networking sites like LinkedIn and Facebook that facilitate social networking, wiki software like PBworks that facilitate the development of collaborative workspace, cloud computing office tools like Google apps that facilitate document, editing, and calendar sharing (Chee-Kit, 2010). Others are media sharing networks like YouTube and Flickr that facilitate social tagging and experience sharing tools like WordPress, Twitter, and Delicious that facilitate online bookmarking (Danah, 2007). The use of social media has increased in a great deal, and it is estimated that 3 billion people across the globe are using social media platforms (Riel, 2001). Apparently, technology is very core in inquiring information and in creating a private learning network (PLN) which enriches oneself in the digital world, creates connection with different people and contributes in making the world a global village.The Role of Technology in Information GatheringThe 21st century is marked by massive technological advances in the social arena. Due tothis reason, education is shifting from knowledge transfer model to learning network model. Knowledge can be shared efficiently and quickly to a large group of people through a learning network (Martin, 2014). Therefore, a private learning network is a crucial tool in the modern-daylearning. A private learning network (PLN) denotes to a network of resources that include
