Jake FirestoneHIST 110Extra Credit12/5/18The use of primary sources in Ken Burns’ The Civil War, Episode 9 Better Angels of our Nature, helped me as a viewer to really gain an in depth view of what happened during that time period. Most importantly, I felt the uses of diaries/personal entries were the best examples used to tell the true story of our civil war. These diaries come from first hand experiences, rather than the “talking heads” that provide context throughout the episode. I felt as though the historians were able to help bring together the main topics with what they had tosay, but for me it is hard to know whether what they are saying is entirely true or not, because they don’t cite any sources for the information they are talking about. However, I am sure the information that they provide is correct, but it’s just hard to trust what they say without knowledge of where it is coming from. So I feel as a viewer they should tell us where exactly they are gathering this information.
