END OF LIFE DECISIONS2End of Life Decision Making with Patients and FamiliesThe role of the nurse in end of life decision making with patients and their families can be challenging but with effective skills, communication and utilizing the code of ethics will definitely help in the process. End of life decision making is ultimately done by the doctor or physician with patient and family. Nurses are patient advocates and are more involved with end of life decision making for patients and families. Many challenges can occur during end of life care such as making difficult decision, whether to continue or discontinue life support, place a feeding tube and CPR. There are many roles and responsibilities for the nurse, patient and family in end of life care such as speaking and listening to individuals that have legal rights to make decision for the patient if the patient is incompetent. As nurses we need to listen to care and preferences, discussing any changes in conditions in patient status treating with care, support and compassion,and communicate effectively and efficiently. Primary Polices in Regard to End of Life DecisionThere are many evidence based legal, federal and hospital policies in terms of end of life care and ethical dilemmas.
