Call-and-Response - An African America singing style rooted in Africa. A solo call tells a story to which a group responds, often with repeated lyrics. 4. Middle Passage -voyage of slave ships across Atlantic Ocean 5. Chattel Slavery -form of slavery in which enslaved are treated legally as property 6. Industrial Revolution – economic change that began in England during early 18 th century 7. Slave Codes - sets of laws during the colonial period and in individual states after the American Revolution which defined the status of slaves and the rights and responsibilities of slave owners 8. Manumission – the act of freeing a slave by the slave’s master 9. Low Country – the coastal regions of South Carolina and Georgia 10. Black English -variety of American English that is influenced by west African grammar 11. Gang Labor System – mode of organizing labor that had west African antecedents. Slaves worked under a slave driver 12. Northwest Ordinance - A law passed in 1787 to regulate the settlement of the Northwest Territory, which eventually was divided into several states of the Middle West. 13. Three-Fifths Clause – clause in U.S constitution providing that a slave be counted as 3/5 of a free person 14. Domestic Slave Trade - reallocated slaves across states during the antebellum period

15. Prince Hall Masons – a black masonic order formed in 1791 in Boston under leadership of prince hall 16. 16. African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church 17. American Colonization Society 18. Missouri Compromise- was an effort by Congress to defuse the sectional and political rivalries triggered by the request of Missouri late in 1819 for admission as a state in which slavery would be permitted 19. Black Laws – laws pass in states of the old northwest during early 19 th century banning black settlement 17. 20. Jim Crow- the former practice of segregating black people 21. Black Nationalists- a member of a group of militant blacks who advocate separatism from the whites and the formation of self- governing black communities 22.
