They were distinguished by their fierce advocacy for the abolition of slavery and enfranchisement of black citizens 10) Fourteenth Amendment : granted citizenship to all persons born or naturalized in the United States—including former slaves 11) Fifteenth Amendment : “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.” 12) Redemption : the overthrow or defeat of Radical Republicans (white and black) by white Democrats 13) Compromise of 1877 : an informal, unwritten deal that settled the intensely disputed 1876 U.S. presidential election.
