Big Ideas What I Learned What European events influenced independence movements throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, and why? People in Latin America were inspired by the ideas of the Enlightenment and admired the success from they American and French Revolution. They all wanted freedom and for everyone to be equal. How was the class system structured in the Spanish and Portuguese colonies? Peninsulares - people who were born in Europe and controlled government. Creoles - born in the colonies and who owned most of the land Mestizos - mixed European and Indian ancestry (had few rights) Mulattos - mixed European and African ancestry (had few rights) Indians - They had few, if any, rights Slaves - considered property. What were the major events and who were the major figures in Caribbean revolutions? Haiti: after the French Revolution, the line in Hate between the rich and the poor grew bigger. The slaves, rebelled and to end this, the French gave slaves rights and abolished slavery. Toussaint L'Ouverture helped to rid Haiti of both British and Spanish influence.
