Chapter 3 terms Acetylcholine (Ach) o Neurotransmitter- motor control at junction b/t nerves and muscles o Mental processes : learning, memory, sleeping, dreaming Action potential o Neural impulse- passes along axon o Causes release of chemicals from terminal buttons Agonist o Any drug that enhances actions of a specific neurotransmitter All-or-none principle o Neuron fires with same potency o It either fires or it doesn’t ; never partially fires Antagonist o Any drug that inhibits actions of a specific neurotransmitter Autonomic nervous system o Component of PNS- regulates body’s internal environment by: stimulating glands & maintaining internal organs Autoreceptors o Neurons own neurotransmitter receptors o Regulate release of neurotransmitters Axon o long, narrow outgrowth of a neuron o info other neurons Cell body o In neuron; info from other neurons is collected and processed Central nervous system (CNS)
