Wendy Zhang African American Studies Unit 4 Review 1 10.18.18 Responding to Chapter 14 of “American Politics and the African American Quest for Universal Freedom” Hanes Walton & Robert C. Smith In chapter 14 of the “American Politics and the African American Quest for Universal Freedom” by Hanes Walton & Robert C. Smith focused on US domestic policies and the continuing theme of African Americans quest for social and economic justice. It also revolves around the theme of this unit: race. Race determines the different class distributions, and due to these class distinctions, there’s a permanent exclusion of minorities throughout history. In other words, a lot of the historical exclusions that were in place weren’t accidental, in fact, they well planned. Two essential ideas brought up in the textbook are the Jim Crow laws(Walton & Smith 297) and the Civil Rights Act of 1964(Walton & Smith 299). The Jim Crow laws would be a perfect example of a political exclusion of African-Americans that was well-planned to benefit some. The job of the Jim Crow was to legalized racial segregation.
