Analyze a health or nursing profession public policy issue that impacts a group of people and requires a policy change. Public policy refers to a decision that is made by the government to make things better in society (Birkland, 2014). When understanding public policy and its creation, one must understand why the idea came up in the first place. Even with the uncertainty of the role that the government plays in society, public policies have played a significant role in ensuring the safety of the society. Public policy is personified in “constitutions”, judicial assessment and governmental acts, or acts of the governing body, such as the state nursing board. Notably, the belief that the government, or other governing bodies can make a difference in society is strong even with various studies and observations on how the government and other governing bodies can often do the wrong thing. Registered Nurses (RN) Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) are not required to obtain continuing education for regular licensure renewal in the state of Indiana. Although Indiana does not currently require it, the healthcare system and the patients it serves would benefit from implementation of public policy requiring RN’s, and LPN’s to obtain continuing education prior to license renewal. The implementation of this policy is important to ensure the ongoing competence of nurses through continued education. Ultimately, the implementation of this policy would increase patient safety and outcomes. The implementation of this policy will affect every nurse in the state of Indiana regardless of where they are currently practicing. Healthcare is ever changing, continuing education for nurses will provide up to date knowledge and increased competency for the nurses of Indiana. Currently the nurses in Indiana are not required to receive any education above and beyond the education they received in their original nursing degree. With this standard in place a nurse can be unemployed for 10 years, having to no exposure to the medical field, and return to nursing by simply accepting a job. There are several issues with this. First, the medical field changes almost daily, Second, the nurse hasn’t utilized her As a rule, we as a society believe that the government, and other governing bodies such as the state board of nursing, are capable of making policies that make life better because if not, we are really just accepting shortcomings as unavoidable. As a nurse in the healthcare field, accepting shortcomings as unavoidable is simply unacceptable. Public policy is supposed to do
