Discussion questions for week 2: 1. Lipids are non-polar molecules. Explain why lipids could not support life as we know it. 2. Describe the structures and functions of starch and cellulose. What are the similarities and differences between the two compounds? 3. Be ready to describe, identify, and explain all the functional groups presented in lecture. (Carbonyl, phosphate,etc.) 4. Describe and give examples of hydration and dehydration reactions. 5. What is the significance of 104.5 E? Be ready to give a presentation on the relevancy of this number for life on Earth. (Note: some sources might have a slightly different figure= 104E to 105E) Additional Questions: 1. What is the Cell Theory of Life? Restate the theory in your own words. 2. What are the roles of glycolipids, glycoproteins, and sterols in cell membranes? 3. Compare eukaryotic cells to prokaryotic cells. Use drawings, text, diagrams, etc. 4. Consider the nature of chemical bonds/interactions. Which types are relatively strong?
