Geology Notes 1/24/08 Plate Tectonics -marine sediments on top of Mt Everest - plate tectonics : theory that the earth’s surface conists of a mosaic of internall rigid plates that move relative to each other - plate boundaries : zones of faulting that separate extensive, internally rigid areas of crust. Plate boundaries separate plates and are where the vast majority of deformation within the curst is concentrated. -Alred Wegener wrote first exposition of multiple lines of evidence that continents were joined in geologic past. (theory of continental drift, precursor of plate tectonics) also named Pangaea -ancient rocks assemblages match in different continents and fit together (Pangaea) -locations of fossils also reconstruct and fit when you put the continents all together -British Physicist Theory of continental drift was proved wrong as the oceanic crust was too strong for continents to plow through, and it lacked a mechanism for moving a continent
