The debate is or was if the bomb was necessary, yes or no? When the atomic bomb became available in July 1945, it appeared to be the most promising way to end the war as soon as possible and without the drawbacks of the alternatives. There were alternative plans presented before the bomb was dropped that may have saved lives.
