Farias Email: [email protected] Phone (909)869-2213 Office Hours: Online Only: FRI = 6-7pm, SAT = 9-10am, SUN = 5-7pm Course Objectives: Socio-economic and scientific issues in the Food, Agricultural, and Apparel Systems within a framework of moral philosophy and ethical reasoning. Analysis of topics in biotechnology in agricultural production and food processing, intellectual and physical property rights in a market based economy, human nutrition problems, the treatment of animals and the environment, worker rights in a global food and apparel marketplace, and American’s role in reducing world hunger and malnutrition. Four lectures. Open to all majors. Required of all Agriculture majors. Expected Outcomes Students should be able to: 1.Identify socio-economic, political, cultural, and ethical issues that emerge in food, agricultural and apparel production, distribution and consumption. 2.Critically evaluate the factual and normative assertions made in scientific and popular culture about food and apparel production and distribution. 3.Critically compare and contrast the historical and contemporary literary presentation of technological change in the food, agricultural and apparel industry. 4.Evaluate different ethical theories for assessing the value of new scientific and technological knowledge to food production. 5.Develop a better understanding of why key issues in agriculture, food, and apparel are issues, and why people disagree about them. 6.Formulate a philosophic argument advocating a position on a current issue in the food, agricultural or apparel system.
