Sarah McGinnis 08/26/17 Spanish 3 Cuba – 1 The Cuban Missile Crisis lasted from October 16 th , 1962 to October 28 th of the same year. The three main international leaders involved were John F. Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev, and Fidel Castro. The Soviet Union placed missiles in Cuba in an attempt to even out the playing field since the US had missiles placed near the Russian border. Khrushchev claimed he had no intent to ever fire the missiles merely use them as another pawn “in a game of superpower competition”. Fidel Castro was the President of Cuba at the time of the Cold War. He allowed Russian missiles to be placed in Cuba because he believed it would guarantee Cuba’s safety and further the cause of socialism. Both JFK and Khrushchev found him hard to negotiate with because of his radical ideas and incendiary mindset. Castro
