Unformatted text preview: Boston Tea Party 27/03/2008 17:01:00 ← The Tea Act (1773) • Wasn’t a tax on tea – that already existed as a result of the Townshend Acts, it actually lowered the price of tea o The result was that it allowed the East India Company to trade directly to the Colonists and gave them a monopoly in the colonies b/c no one else was allowed to sell tea in the colonies Cut out the middle-man merchants in the colonies o The East India Company was tanking and this was Parliament’s solution so that they could unload their warehouses and stay afloat • The people in Boston didn’t have the smuggling connections that people in NYC and Philly had, so acts of Parliament really effected them • People thought that the Tea Act was the Trojan Horse that the British were sending Americans o Thought it would make them complacent and then the Brits would eventually tax them on everything...
