Religious stuff: 1095: Crusades begin to take the holy land back from the Muslims. This doesn’t work. Instead, they brought back silk, spices, soap, etc from the Muslims along The Silk Road. Marco Polo: 1254-1324 Traveled along the Silk Road to get to the east (China). Discovered there was lots of gunpowder. Wanted people to go to China as well, but the Silk Road was full of assassins and such, so no one wanted to. Muslims start spreading their religion everywhere 15th Century Stuff Three big things: 1. Reformation in Europe 2. Renaissance 3. Exploration Printing press invented at this time. In the 1450s, Gutenberg prints the first book in history, The Bible. Contrary to elementary school teachings, most people thought the world WAS in fact round, not flat. Prince Henry - Portuguese explorer. Founded The University of the Seas. 1440 - Portuguese travel around Africa Guinea Coast- slave trade. Reasons for slavery: 1. Racism 2. “Civilization” 3. Giving them a “better life” 4. Feelings of superiority 1487 - Bartholomew Diaz - Portuguese. First to reach the south tip of Africa. Colonies established 1498- Vasco de Gama reaches India. 1492 - Columbus. Spanish explorer Discovers The Bahamas, Cuba, and Hispanola (later Haiti and Dominican Republic) (atlas page 14) Amerigo Vespucci - Sails to New World and says it’s not India. America is named after him, by Martin Waldseemuller, who draws a map of the New World in 1507. Spain’s Goals 1. Gold 2. God 3. Glory Things Spain finds in the New World 1. Gold 2. Potatoes 3. Tomatos 4. Tobacco 5. Coffee 6. Corn

Buffalo discovered. 1539 - Coronado begins expedition. North exploration. Then goes to New Mexico. Natives give them wrong directions. And they go to Kansas and find nothing. Meanwhile, the natives discover their horses. Cardenas finds the Grand Canyon. Ferdinand Magellan - Sailed the entire circumference of the Earth. Had 3 ships. Strait of Magellan. In 1521, discovers The Philippines. Spain is in control of it from 1521-1898. U.S. Takes it during Spanish-American war. 1565 - England and France explore North America. St. Augustine, Florida becomes a settlement.
