Lab Report 1: Chromatography Chemistry 1 Teddy Portney May 28, 2007 Summer 1, 2007 1. Purpose: The purpose of this lab was to examine how a solvent separates different ingredients in an otherwise homogeneous material. 2. Experimental Methods: We performed this experiment as stated in the “Procedure” section of Tufts University’s Chemistry 01 Experiment # 1 lab handout from Summer 2007. 3. Data and Observations: Attached to this lab write up is the original sheet of paper, on which was blotted the sample dyes. Shown below is a table created to show the different dyes used and the distance traveled along the sheet of paper. 4. Results and calculations: For this lab, we calculated an Rf value for each dye used. The Rf value is the ratio of the distance traveled by the solvent to the distance traveled by the dye itself. The higher this number, the more partial the dye was to the moving phase, and similarly, the Color Distance (cm) Blue 1 5.4 Green 3 4.4 Yellow 5 2.9 Yellow 6 2.75 Blue 2 0.9 Red 40 0.5 Red 3 0.3 Turmeric 0.1 Unknown 0
