Refresh yourself on the main ideas withinthis chapter to prepare for this part of the exam. I have listed a few major themes below toconsider as you study. Each question will be worth one point – totaling four.• (Pre-European) African Empires: about the major ideas of these sections (main arguments (major 3 empires in west africa (ghana, mali, songhai empire) .Mali and songhai were both muslims and expanded the gold trade, expanded trade relations between western african and north african regions. They start trading more with arab regions and extend african gold and ivory, palm wine, african textiles into those regions. • Slavery in Western Africa (pre-European control): wasn’t generational, your children wouldn’t die slaves, caste system: similar to Europe’s system. Slaves captured in war, the wealthier the person who owned you the better your status. If the slave were to conform to their owners they could shift their status and improve their social standing through marriage and conforming. Slaves also had rights (can’t be brutalized or will be reported to the council of elders, they can argue for their freedom or you pay them a fine). The slaves of women are morevaluable than the slaves of men (specially for married women, who had higher status that unmarried or divorced women). Because the slave of the mother were part of the family (lower order family members) while the slaves of the man were seen as slaves of the community. Mother slaves were used for domestic tasks such as sewing, family accounting, storing and preparing weapons for the husband or the eldest sons. The slaves of the father are not of the preview of the wife, they were used as foot soldiers (carried weapons, cleared dead bodies) or field workers. This has an impact on how slaves are traded, the slaves of men have a higher possibility of being captured and traded. • The Enslavement of the Indigenous:happened everywhere, spain set the tone, this results in epidemics, viral diseases to spread very quickly. This means high mortality rates for ind. People. Also the work they did was not normal for ind. People. They used to eat every part of the animal, now they don’t so they die very quickly as their lifestyle was changing so now they need more labor. Bart (Las casas) advocated for end of slavery of indig. People because it was wrong, get African people as slaves, then he noticed that was also wrong but it was too late so he died poor and disgraced (He was a friar). They’re going to be the first people to be legally freed (manumitted) by the spanish crown. Spanish (seven part law) was trying to free but still
