Teddy Portney December 5, 2007 Astronomy 22 1.) The display that physically manifests the rotation of the earth is the pendulum, which swings on a stationary axis while the surface of the earth rotates below it, moving pins into the path of the pendulum at distinct, equal time intervals. 2.) The planetarium show was “Into The Unknown.” It dealt with the size of the universe and whether there were other planets on which life could/has/does exist. I learned about the effect that dark matter has on other celestial objects. According to the show, this dark matter composes about 95% of the universe by mass. The show also reviewed the electromagnetic spectrum and mentioned how stars emit a lot of energy that humans cannot detect with the naked eye. The ticket stubs for this and for the 3D Sun show are attached to this sheet. 6.) (Extra credit) The 3D Sun show was a short film shown in incredibly high definition. It detailed the recent exploits of NASA’s STEREO satellites, launched in 2005. These satellites captured magnificent images of the sun, showing features of the sun not previously predicted or seen. 3.) Observing was done on Friday, November 30, 2007. The weather was cold, windy, and clear around 8:00 pm at the Museum of Science, Boston. 4.) The objects observed include the Pleiades star cluster and Polaris, or the North Star, which are sketched and detailed below. Sketches:
