Garrett Freas Professor Cordova Cultural Studies: Latin America 11/23/18 The Superclasico The Superclasico is one of the most highly anticipated football (or soccer) matches on the planet. The intensity of the match is likely unparalleled by any other sporting event in the world. The two teams that make up the rivalry, Boca Juniors, and River Plate, have been fierce rivals since 1923 (Massarella, 2016). Not long after the rivalry began, River Plate moved north to a more affluent neighborhood (Massarella, 2016). This led to a class divide in the rivalry that enhanced its intensity. The Superclasico is known for its intensity, as well as the passion of the fans and players involved. With extremely high intensity and strong emotions surrounding the match, I think that the Superclasico is an extreme example of both the positives and negatives of an intense, high stakes sporting event. On the positive side of the spectrum, the Superclasico brings together hundreds of thousands of fans for each team. These fans all come together with the
