Lecture 6 Reading Notes (pg. 130-138) I. Membrane structure results in selective permeability a. The permeability of the Lipid bi-layer i. Hydrophobic (non-polar) molecules, such as hydrocarbons, CO2, and Oxygen can dissolve in the lipid bi-layer ii. The hydrophobic core of the membrane impedes direct passage of ions and polar molecules, which are hydrophilic, through the membrane. b. Transport Proteins i. Allow certain ions and a variety of polar/hydrophilic molecule to pass through the membrane ii. A trans-membrane protein that helps a certain substance or class of closely related substances to cross the membrane iii. Aquaporins: A transport protein in the plasma membrane of a plant or animal cell that specifically facilitates the diffusion of water across the membrane (osmosis) iv. The transport proteins are very selective c. Section 7.2 Questions i. Two molecules that can cross a lipid bi-layer without help from membrane proteins are O2 and CO2. What properties allow this? 1. O2 and CO2 are both small, uncharged molecules that can easily pass through the hydrophobic core of a membrane ii. Why would water molecules need a transport protein (aquaporin) to move rapidly and in large quantities across a membrane? 1.
