MOST IMPORTANT: cost of transportation Alfred Weber 1868-1958 (middle of IR) Economist “Theory of Locations of Industries” in 1909 Manufacturing plants will locate where the costs are the least Location Theory: Predicts where a business should/will be located. Economic, political, and cultural reasons (whim). VARIABLE COSTS- change with energy, transportation costs, & labor costs. As transportation occurs, price changes. 1. Transportation: most important, cost to transport materials AND final products need to be the lowest 2. Labor: High labor costs reduce profit. Cheap, non-union labor may make transportation costs not matter (right to work- can’t strike). 3. Agglomeration : cluster of business that work together, usually manufacturing. Costs can be lower because they share costs.
