Gallagher 15 November 2006 The High Qing: 1661-1800 The Nature of Imperial Rule o That is do we as Manchu’s rule by difference or by sameness—there isn’t a clear cut answer here—we see evidence of both strategies used by Qing Emperors The Forcing of the people to shave their heads is significant because it shows that there are different people other than the Chinese o Kangxi’s Consolidation: (1661-1722) Consolidates control of Mongolia and starts process of controlling Tibet Issue of Balance: Make Manchus, Mongol/Tibetan and Han Chinese support the regime. The “ Sacred Edict” of 1670 Confucian rhetoric written by Kangxi Supposed to be sent out to entire empire It reinforced all sorts of Confucian values o To show that the emperor also has same values as most of the Chinese that he now rules he began to learn the Confucian classics so he could connect with the people. o
