Gallagher 1 December 2006 New Culture, New Nation 1915-1926 Backgroud: 21 Demands o Yuan Shikai forced to sign on May 7, 1915 o Europe, preoccupied with World War 1 so Japan capitalizes on this and steps up their efforts to control China o Call for Japanese control of Manchuria, Mongolia, the Yangtze River, Fujian and coastal areas o Right to own land and develop industries in these areas The New Culture Movement 1915-1919 o Iconoclasm A complete unwillingness to accept the norms and assumption of traditional Confucian culture o Attack on family values o “Youth” rises to the forefront of nationalism o A new emphasis on the individual, individual rights o Total faith in “science” o Rights of women Women had been exploited Now female scholars begin to write pieces on society Don’t want to have an arranged marriage They start to have a role in Chinese society They begin to try to stop the foot binding practice o Chen Duxiu Founder of the “New Youth”
