7 February 2008 Economic Geographies 2: Write down 3 economic conditions you associate with “the core”, “the periphery”, and “the semi- periphery” o Core = highly educated, free trade, colonizers, control of technology, high wages, mass consumption, economy based on knowledge, high skilled jobs, wealth Jobs = computer programming (high technology), banking, research and development o Periphery = low wages, unskilled labor, colonies, lack of worker benefits/regulations, economy dependent on core nations Jobs = manufacturing jobs Core Processes change over time Different states in US are core and peripheral Within a city there are areas with core processes and peripheral processes Old Division of Labor o Vertical Integration = firms own or control all links in commodity chain from raw materials to sales of finished goods All manufacturing operations located in one place: owners, R&D, assembly line often in one building Enhanced status and bargaining power of labor
