14 February 2008 ARTICLE FOR WEEK 4 IS ON EXAM Why Countries Go Along with EPZs o The globalization discourse Competition and the fear of being left out People feel like if they don’t offer these benefits than Transnational corporations won’t come This shows that PLACE is still important because they are competing to who can produce goods cheaper o The Developmentalist Discourse o Cooptation of Political Elites by TNCs Daka Bangladesh, the wealth population has exploded o Few Alternatives What are they going to do if they don’t attract the Transnational corporations They feel like they won’t have jobs at all if they don’t get them Do NIDL and EPZ bring Development? o Bring FDL, manufacturing jobs, income and employment o Little technology transfer (core processes) or wealth accumulation o Possible via technology transfers and investments in core processes 4 tigers and geopolitics the Asian economies that took off in the 80s o Singapore, Hong Kong, Korea…. China has influence to do this
