Bio 241 Human Physiology Lecture Notes Chapter 20 Reproductive I. Structures Male reproductive system Testes –germs cells, these cells divide during meiosis A. Sertoli cells in seminiferous tubules 1. have receptors for FSH which enhances spermatogenesis allows for maximum sperm production, but not necessary 2. have receptors for testosterone so influenced by Leydig cells 3. secrete inhibin (negative feedback) B. Leydig cells in interstitial tissue 1. stimulated by LH to secrete testosterone 2. testosterone effect = growth of testes, muscles, bone, larynx, hemoglobin synthesis, estrogen production, spermatogenesis Scrotum – sac with smooth muscle to wrinkle skin of testes and maintain lower temperature for sperm health Epididymis - sperm mature Vas deferens – stores and transports sperm, mixes with semen components, moves sperm through ejaculatory duct Seminal vesicles – forms 60% semen volume, fructose, prostaglandins, semen coagulants Prostate - forms 30% semen volume, neutralizing solution, motility agents
