Final Research Paper Maya AngelouThe reason I choose Maya Angelou as the author to research is I find her poems and speeches refreshing. As she faced adversity throughout her life, she found a way to rise above all the obstacles. Maya is an inspiration to all who endures difficulties. I made the selection of the short story “Steady Going Up" because of the reflection of what young black men face as a daily challenge. The story of Robert is revealing to me the vulnerability of innocent black men. How those of the white race stereotype African Americans men? The violence black men must endure moving forward in life while dealing with personal issues. Black men today still face these types of animosity. The short story leaves a lot to a person imagination. Maya Angelou wrote the story out of the consciousness that African American women feel toward the endangerment that black men face, suggesting what the men might do to bolster and protect their manhood (May 2004). The main charter Robert is thinking about all the responsibility he has endured as a young man. He has done all he knows to support his family after their parents passed away six months apart. He put his life on hold to support his younger sister. Robert works and helps her to attend nursing school. Unfortunately, she becomes ill, and he once again must take control by getting on a bus from Memphis, Tennessee, to Cincinnati, Ohio.
