IMMUNE SYSTEM STUDY GUIDE ONE 1. Immune system : a population of cells, including leukocytes and macrophages, that occur in most organs of the body and protect against foreign organisms, some foreign chemicals, and cancerous or other aberant host cells 2. Pathogen : disease-causing organism or chemical 3. 5 Categories of pathogens: a. Bacteria b. Fungus (fungi) c. Virus d. Protozoa e. Parasites 4. Distinguish between specific and non-specific immunity a. Specific : defeats pathogens and leaves a “memory” of pathogen to build immunity (two forms) i. Cellular : cell-mediated: employs lymphocytes that directly attack and destroy foreign cells or diseased host cells. ii. Humoral : anti-body mediated: indirect attack in which antibodies, not the immune cells, assault the pathogen b. Non-specific : external barriers (skin and mucous membranes) i. Leukocytes, macrophages, antimicrobial proteins, immune surveillance, inflammation, and fever. 5. 5 main categories of leukocytes: a. Granulocytes (granular leukocytes) i. Neutrophils ( >60% of white blood cells) ii. Basophils iii. Eosinophils b. Agranular leukocytes i. Monocytes ii. Lymphocytes 1. B cells 2. T cells 3. NK cells 6.
