Cultural Competence 2AbstractWorking in the field of social work we are required to work with clients, when doing so one must remember that every family comes from a different cultural background. As social workers one must be culturally competent to successfully engage with clients, by being knowledgeable of the client’s ethnicities, race, and values. If a social worker is to lack in knowledge of a specific culture related to the client, it is their responsibility to do research in order to better understand and assist the client.
Cultural Competence 3BackgroundClaudia is six years of age with a Hispanic cultural background. Six months after Claudia’s parents arrived in the United States, she was born. Claudia resides with both her mother and father in a poverty stricken, urban area (Plummer, Markis & Brocksen, 2014). Claudia’s parents are illegal immigrants, and struggle finically since they haven’t obtained their citizenship. Claudia’s mother is employed in a nail salon working only a few days a week while the father is a labor worker and only works when labor is needed. Claudia’s family came over to America alone with no extended family, but over time became friendly with their neighbors. Claudia and her family have a healthy attachment with one another, and lean on each other for support as they live in a neighborhood full of crime. One day Claudia and her mother where walking in their neighborhood when Claudia witnessed a mugging. Since Claudia witnessed this event it caused a negative impact on her, and has led to an increase in anxiety, and paranoia whenwalking down the street or attending school. (Pummer, Social IssuesThere are several social issues that stand out when assessing Claudia’s family. Poverty, language barriers and undocumented citizenship affect Claudia’s family hand in hand. The family resides in an impoverished neighborhood which means that Claudia’s family is financiallystruggling and this could be linked to her parents being immigrants from Nicaragua. Coming from a home where poverty impacts the family, Claudia will struggle in the future to maintain a good education. Claudia will attend a low income school where resources are not made availableand as she gets older she maybe expected to help provide financially for the family as she is bilingual which she means she will have to stop attending school.
