CONDUCTING A DIAGNOSTIC INTERVIEW WITH A MSE 2 APPEARANCE Carl Dunn, a 19-year old Caucasian man of average build, appears to be his stated age. The client was dressed in casual attire with appropriate hygiene and grooming. However, he had dark circles under his eyes which may be an indication is poor sleeping habits. Carl arrived at the interview wearing a T-shirt, long pants, and a ponytail with dark long hair. BEHAVIOR OR PSYCHOMOTOR ACTIVITY Although the client demonstrates appropriate eye contact with the professional, he appears to be uncomfortable with the interview process. ATTITUDES TOWARD THE INTERVIEWER OR EXAMINER The attitude towards the examiner was polite, cooperative, and engaging. Carl displayed a sense of humor with the examiner by saying jokes. The examiner made the client feel relaxed and open to speak. AFFECT AND MOOD Throughout the examination, Carl’s effect was generally euthymic and congruent, as he stated he was calm. The client rated his mood as “right down the middle” on the scale of 0 to 10. Carl reported he had a crappy on the previous day. SPEECH AND THOUGHT Speech/Thought was fluid and spontaneous although verbose and circumferential. For example, Carl answered questions by using past experiences when he felt his answer was incorrect. PERCEPTUAL DISTURBANCES Carl reported he has imaginary friends. He reports he sees a ghost, but that other people see them as well. The client reported hearing voices. Carl added that he is aware of the voices and that the voices are his creative thoughts/imaginations. ORIENTATION AND CONSCIOUSNESS Name: When the examiner asked for his full name, Carl stated, “I’ve actually had quite a few different names growing. You want my current name?”. The client mentioned the names Carl Dunn, Todd, Warren, Jr., and Raccoon.
